THE FUTURE WAS HERE – URBAN WITCHES CALENDAR at Æther / SOFIA

THE FUTURE WAS HERE

Opening -11.02.2017 from 19h.

Æther invites you to come discover the different views from the selected artists from around the globe, marking out a perplexed map that envisions the geo political movements and standpoints as well giving a feel about the mental effects and defects formed and lived by different societies and conditions.

For many of us, the year 2017 is not just a year of reminiscence and revisit, but also a new possibility to look ahead and secretly or openly predict our own or common future.
In the era of post-apocalypse, post-human,post-political, post industrial and the modern,we wonder if the so awaited future had come, and perhaps surpassed us rapidly, leaving us unable to recognise it while trapped in our daily livings.Or perhaps a vision lost between the excess of war and picturesque brutalities, putting the imagination to auto pause?! Broken time machine needs reparation, or simply coming to terms with the idea that we strive the state of stasis and the virtual limbo, hanged and poised between new possible lives designed especially for us…?!!

URBAN WITCHES NOT BITCHES #2

URBAN WITCHES NOT BITCHES #2 : A Pagan Wheel of the Seasons

“WE ARE BADASS, MAKING MAGIC WITH OUR PUSSIES.”
Lisa Lister

14-28 JANUARY 2017
OPENING + CALENDAR LAUNCH: 14 JANUARY 2017 @ 19:00
NEUROTITAN GALLERY / ROSENTHALER STR 39 / 13127 BERLIN

URBAN WITCHES is not a Feminist Exhibition. Rather, it exhibits a new way of seeing the Feminine.

Raw. Powerful. Painful. Exposed. Uncooked. The New Feminine is wild, intact. Undamaged by the rational mind, the New Feminine inhabits a realm of uncivilized norms in which the Dark Feminine, so feared by patriarchy, emerges transformed.

Conceived by Vivana Druga, URBAN WITCHES is composed of an exhibition and calendar. Eight women artists have been invited to create installation, performance and sound-based work.

The printed calendar, featuring eight photographic portraits of eight artists (performance artists, sculptors, costume designers and illustrators), forms the basis of the exhibition.

Each portrait symbolizes a festival or ‘sabbath’ in the URBAN WITCHES 2017 Calendar / A Pagan Wheel of the Seasons, and is represented by an artist fitting the transformative energy of that season. Each portrait was created as part of a ritual during the year 2016.

The URBAN WITCHES 2017 Calendar / A Pagan Wheel of the Seasons is based on the eight seasons of the neo-pagan ‘wheel of the year’ and its cycles of birth, death and renewal. The wheel of the year developed out of cross-cultural awareness in early modern Europe, influenced by Celtic traditions.

URBAN WITCHES deploys occult, pseudo sciences such as astrology reflexively and allusively. The exhibition is designed as an artist’s laboratory rather than a fixed entity. The calendar subverts pin-up expectations to present icons of the New Feminine.

Viviana Druga´s approach to performance and photography involves the community around her. As with her previous project, 22+1 Tarot de Berlin, she transforms friends and family into icons. Their personal characteristics determine their psycho-magical roles.

The exhibition is accompanied by performance art and sound-based events, Shaltmira will be performing tattoo art for the duration of the show. Kasia Justka will be making food and sound in her Singing Kitchen, and Rubbish Fairy animates her House of Doll.

Jede Aufnahme symbolisiert einen Fest- oder Feiertag im Kalender URBAN WITCHES 2017/ A Pagan Wheel of the Seasons.

PIN UP !

Gruppenausstellung

Vernissage am Donnerstag, den 19. Februar 2015, 19.00 – 21.00 Uhr
Ausstellung: 20.

Thoughts spread and individualize in the digital ether, where confines start to oscillate. Corporealities, consciousness and communication are in a constant state of change. The shift into a higher frequency forms our means of expression.

Inspired by the format of the séance, Gary Cutman – founder of YOU ARE THE ARTIST . – will serve as an anonymous medium for one evening in the attempt to communicate with the digital afterlife.

An event by artists for artists that draws out of their dimensions and pays homage to creativity. Mystical experiences included, supported by DJs, visuals, sound installations and performance as well as the premiere of the experimental short “HADES”, which drags it’s viewer into the deepest depths of the underworld.

22+1 Exhibition and performance

Actual Size Gallery Los Angeles
October 1, 2014 at 8:00pm – 10:30pm

For the past two years the Berlin based artists Viviana Druga & Tata Christiane have privately hosted a series of performative photographic sessions to re-stage the Tarot de Marseille, a deck of tarot cards with a design that can be traced to the 15th century. The backdrops, costumes, and props they employed were inspired by the original cards, but also by the artists’ own private mythologies and those of their subjects who were selectively drawn from family, friends, and acquaintances. This collaborative project mines archetypal symbolism through digital photo collages that create diorama like tableaus. The images also make reference to classic religious, mystic, and psychological themes. The new deck of images explore the personal ways each individual may relate to these potent symbols.Viviana Druga will make performative readings for visitors throughout the night of October 1st.

Viviana Druga b. 1982 Transylvania, Romania lives and works in Berlin is a photographer and performance artist who has exhibited throughout Europe and has performed in the Sahara Desert and Indonesia among other places.
